Wizz Air cuts back its Cluj operations and moves flights to Tirgu Mures

Wizz Air, the largest low fare - low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe announced at press conferences today that it would reduce capacity by 26% at Cluj-Napoca Airport. The affected capacity would be accommodated at Tirgu Mures Transylvania Airport.
The decision follows the airline's recent dispute with Cluj Airport management who opened discussions on the existing contract and announced the introduction of new additional airport charges. The airline stated clearly that such new conditions would result in scaling back its operations in Cluj and reallocate capacity in favor of Tirgu Mures.
Subsequently, Wizz Air will reduce its Cluj operating base by one Airbus A320 to two aircraft and move it to Tirgu Mures Transylvania Airport to effectively advance the start of the airline's 15th base to the 5th of May from the earlier announced 16th of June. As a result the Weeze-Düsseldorf, Roma Fiumicino and Dortmund routes will no longer be served from Cluj:
Destinations affected in Cluj Frequency /week Change
Dortmund 5 Cancelled
Rome Fiumicino 5 Cancelled
Weeze Dusseldorf 2 Cancelled
London Luton 7 -1
Paris Beauvais 6 -3
Starting on 5 May 2011 Wizz Air will start the operation of the following routes from Tirgu Mures:
Destinations affected in Cluj Frequency /week Change
Paris Beauvais 3 Start: May 5th
Dortmund 5 Start: May 5th
Rome Fiumicino 5 Start: May 5th
London Luton 4 Start: May 5th
Weeze Dusseldorf 2 New route
We encourage our customers to check the latest updates on wizzair.com. Wizz Air will accommodate each of the already booked passengers of the affected flights by re-booking them on the new flights or refunding the tickets.
“We remain committed to making the lowest possible fares available to our customers. Should an airport increase charges for whatever reasons we will react to it in order to protect our travelers from higher costs and higher fares.” - said John Stephenson, Executive Vice President of Wizz Air. "It is hard to understand why Cluj Airport increases charges in the middle of the economic crisis in Romania losing a quarter of a million passengers and putting hundreds of jobs in the region on jeopardy." - he added.
